This coup in Manila was not expected. Accordingly, the German national basketball team was celebrated after its World Cup triumph – and now receives another award on top of that.
Because Germany’s top athletes have chosen the DBB team in their choice – the basket hunters around Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner are “The Best 2023”. In front of four tied runners-up: swimmer Leonie Beck, gymnast Darja Varfolomeev, rower Oliver Zeidler and the men’s national hockey team.
In the first round of voting, a jury consisting of the athlete representatives of the national sports federations from over 100 athletes and teams had identified the five nominees. In the second round of voting, all 4000 athletes supported by Sporthilfe voted online for the quintet.
The winning basketball team was awarded “The Best 2023” at the festive closing gala of the “Sporthilfe Club of the Best 2023” at the Aldiana Club Calabria in Italy.
Voigtmann is already looking forward to 2024
Germany’s co-captain Johannes Voigtmann was connected live from Milan at the closing gala and was visibly touched: “The award as ‘The Best 2023’ is a huge honour for us because it comes from those who are extremely successful themselves and know best what our world championship title means. That’s why we would like to congratulate all the other four world champions who stood next to us for election,” said Voigtmann – and already expressed anticipation for the event in the coming Olympic year.
Because many basketball world champions are already hunting for baskets in their clubs again, they could not be there in Calabria. However, a total of around 100 top German athletes from summer and winter sports were present in Italy.
