It would be nice to exchange ideas: Herbert on Nagelsmann

Julian Nagelsmann wants to be inspired by the basketball players – their coach is also not averse to an exchange.

Julian Nagelsmann wants to be inspired by the German basketball world champions before the European Championships at home, and their coach Gordon Herbert is also interested in the work of the national football coach. “It would be nice to meet him and Rudi Völler, watch them train and exchange ideas,” Herbert told SID: “We can all learn from other coaches and sports.”

In February, Nagelsmann reported in an interview with Spiegel that he had seen a documentary about the German basketball players: “You could watch the conversations between coaches and players before the World Cup. It became clear that each individual knew his role months before the tournament.” Nagelsmann announced that he would adopt this “clear distribution of roles” with a view to the European Championships at home (June 14 to July 14).

“I’ve heard about it, but I haven’t had any contact with him yet,” Herbert said in an interview with SID. Football coaches in Germany “have a very high standard, they are among the best in the world. I would be delighted if I had the opportunity to talk to them.”

When it comes to success factors, Herbert sees parallels between the 2023 basketball world champion team and the 2014 national football team, which also won the World Cup title. “Both teams had an identity. They played together, never gave up, fought, and were tough and resilient,” explained Herbert.

“I think it’s important for the national football team to look back at the way this team played in 2014, the way we played in 2023,” said Herbert. “It was more about the identity we created. People saw and felt that.”
