Liverpool see Xabi Alonso as Klopp’s heir

Xabi Alonso is a success as coach of Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool see the Spaniard as an heir to Jürgen Klopp, according to reports.

Spaniard Xabi Alonso, 41, has a short coaching career behind him. The one with a job as a youth coach at Real Madrid, before moving on to Real Sociedad’s B team.

There, he was head coach for three years. In October 2022, it was announced that he will take over German side Bayer Leverkusen, which at the time had a weak table position.

The season ended with a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga. However, this season looks set to end better for Alonso and his Leverkusen.

In the opening eleven rounds, Bayer Leverkusen have taken ten wins and drawn one match. At present, they are the league leader.

In October, German newspaper Bild reported that Alonso’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen includes a clause that allows him to leave the German club for some of the teams he represented as a player.

These are Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Alonso has been linked with Real Madrid in the autumn, with Carlo Ancelotti likely to leave next summer.

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool could also be an option, but not for a few seasons.

Jürgen Klopp’s contract with the English giants runs until the summer of 2026. If he leaves, Liverpool are considering replacing him with Alonso.

Alonso’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen also runs until the summer of 2026. It was extended in the month of August this year.

The club Alonso played for the most was Real Madrid. In total, there were six goals and 31 assists in 236 competitive games for the Spanish club.

Alonso also scored 16 goals in 114 caps for Spain. His playing career came to an end in the summer of 2017, then at Bayern Munich.
