After the return of the Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt to the Bundesliga (BBL), Marco Völler has ended his basketball career. The son of DFB sports director Rudi Völler announced this before the last game of the season. The Skyliners lost the final of the 2nd League (ProA) on Sunday with an 80:92 (32:42) against the PS Karlsruhe Lions. Frankfurt had already secured promotion by reaching the final.

Captain Völler played for the club for seven years. For the 2021/22 season, the 35-year-old moved to the position of sports manager and initially played regularly for the second team. Before the last season, Völler was “reactivated” for the ProA team and led the Skyliners back to the BBL.

“Marco has so much earned such a happy ending. He is the face of this rise. Marco is a fixed point, a contact point for young players, and a rock in the surf,” said managing director Yannick Binas.

Coach Denis Wucherer, meanwhile, was already looking ahead to the next challenge. It was now a matter of “taking the spirit of promotion into the summer in order to form a team that is ready for the challenges of the coming season. The quality of the Bundesliga has changed in recent years, it has become higher – we have to focus on that.”
